Gunshot Detection Security Systems

Have you ever thought about an active shooter in your organization or business?

There were more than 300 mass shootings in the U.S. in 2015, according to SecurityInfoWatch, a leading security industry online publication. 2016 saw 323 shootings. 2017, the year of the Las Vegas massacre, there were 117 people killed and 463 people wounded. According to Time Magazine, there were 80 people killed and 66 wounded in 2018.  2019 wasn’t any better; there were more mass shootings across the U.S. in 2019 than there were days in the year.

Mass shootings create chaos in a matter of seconds and without a plan or clear direction they can get even more out of hand. Studies vary but all agree it takes humans 1 – 4 minutes to recognize gunfire and several more seconds to decide what to do.  These are critical seconds and minutes.

Gunshot detection technology can recognize gunshots immediately, contacting authorities before people even know it was a gunshot they heard.  Gunshot detection technology (GDT) collects information including the date and time the sound was recognized, audio clips that capture the duration of the shooting, the number of shots fired, and the geographic location (latitudinal and longitudinal metrics within 25 meters).

Shooter Detection Systems

Mass shootings — those defined by the FBI as a single shooting incident in which four or more people are shot and wounded or killed — have become a sad trend. If you feel like it’s been happening every other day, you’re not far off target.

Many municipalities have seen the benefits of gunshot detection systems. They say the systems are far faster than 911 calls and more reliable. The city of Cincinnati spent $225,000 in 2017 to cover three square miles with a network of listening devices used to triangulate the location of gunshots. Not long after, the gunshot detection technology led to the arrest of a man who was in illegal possession of a firearm and had several warrants out for his arrest. Police were able to get to the location before he could flee and before anyone had even called 911.

Schools are picking up this technology for their campus safety, trying to mitigate the risks for their students and staying proactive. GDT is designed to alert police within seconds of shots being fired and activate surveillance cameras on location which can livestream the scene to authorities. There are sensors that can also lock doors after gunshots.
